Fit For Work

by Louise Powell

13th & 14th March

Is she fit to decide whether he’s fit for work?

Terry is applying for ESA (Employment and Support Allowance) after a combination of physical and mental health conditions forced him to stop working as a plasterer. He arrives at the assessment centre in the hope of securing some much-needed financial support in his time of need. Mrs Smith, the Healthcare Professional who is there to assess Terry’s eligibility for ESA, is sure that he could go back to his former job if he wanted to – and is determined to declare that he is fit for work at all costs.

Fit for Work is a duologue which pushes against the popular but poisonous idea that all working-class benefits claimants are career scroungers in search of an easy life. It highlights a flawed system where vulnerable people are treated with contempt instead of the compassion which they deserve.
